Obituary

With broken hearts, the Coston family announces that our beloved Christopher Louis Coston passed away on Sunday October 5 2025, surrounded by his family. As a loving son, brother, husband, uncle and father, he left an indelible mark on all who knew him through his creative spirit, diligent work ethic, and deep love for sports and music.

A native of Norman Oklahoma, he grew up an avid swimmer, participating in Sooner Swim Club, competing in Junior Olympics and developed a lifelong passion for Oklahoma Sooners football. In his twenties, he met his best friend and future wife Kim in Avon Colorado, developing a love of skiing, and socializing with their mutual friends at the Brass Parrot at Avon Center. They settled back in his home state in the mid 1990s, marrying and becoming parents to two sons, Bradley and Ethan. The family moved to Des Moines Iowa in 2005 and has called the Hawkeye state home for the last two decades.

As the kids grew up, Chris coached both in little league baseball and he enjoyed organizing spring break vacations, going all over the country including Colorado, Florida, and Arizona among other places. In his final years, he got special joy out of creative projects including going on brewery and distillery tours, expanding the backyard of the family house in Des Moines, maintaining his household plants and collecting vinyl records, playing many of them on the stereo system in his man-cave. He was a music connoisseur, a fan of many classic rock bands including the Grateful Dead, Rush and others, going to concerts throughout his life with his family and friends. He passed his passion for music and sports down to his children, and together they took great joy in watching Oklahoma Sooners football in the fall, and this past summer, watched with tears of joy as our beloved Oklahoma City Thunder won their first NBA championship.

Chris was preceded in death by his mother, Sarah Jane Coston, in July 2023. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Kim, his two sons, Bradley and Ethan, his father Vernon and his brother Patrick.

The Coston family thanks all of his family, friends and coworkers for their love, support and prayers in this difficult time. The family also extends special thanks to the doctors, nurses and support staff at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines for their loving care and support this past week.

A Celebration of Life in Chris’s memory will be held on Friday October 10th from 4pm to 7pm at the Coston family residence.
