Obituary

Cleo Bernice (Edinger) Stocker, 90, formerly of Knoxville and Lovilia, IA, passed from this life on Thursday, January 30, 2004, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, in Des Moines. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 4, at the First Church of Nazarene, 4703 Douglas Avenue, in Des Moines. Graveside and committal services will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, at Woodland Cemetery, in Lovilia, Iowa.

Cleo was born the daughter of William and Bessie Klingensmith Askren on December 30, 1913, in Lucas County, Iowa. She married Charles J. Edinger on April 10, 1932. He died in May of 1982. Later, Mrs. Edinger married Ray Stocker on June 4, 1983 in Knoxville, IA and they made their home in Des Moines. In her earlier years, Cleo was a farmer in the Marysville, IA area for many years. She was formerly employed with the U.S. Postal Service as a Postmaster for several years and was also employed with the I.P.E.R.S.

Previously, Cleo was very involved at the Methodist Churches in Marysville, Lovilia and Knoxville. She was not only a dedicated volunteer, and a Circle Chairman, Cleo shined as a lay leader under five different pastors. She was a Sunday school superintendent at Marysville and Lovilia for more than 12 years. In addition to all her work, Cleo taught Sunday school for nearly 50 years, at the different Methodist churches. Cleo was a Girl Scout troop leader and a 4-H Girls Club Leader. She was an avid gardener, and loved to sew for her family, including making quilts for everyone of her grandchildren.

She was survived by her husband of 20 years, Ray Stocker of Des Moines; two daughters, Lois Harris of Northport, FL and Shirley Juhl and her husband Emmert of Exira, IA; one sister, Ethel Gesterling of Long Beach, CA; 10 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, three stepchildren, Lois Knapp of Des Moines, Jim Stocker and his wife Linda of Reynoldsburg, OH, and Sue Clement and her husband Bruce of Des Moines; eight step grandchildren, and 12 step-great-grandchildren. Cleo was preceded into eternal life by her first husband of 50 years, Charles J. Edinger; and one son-in-law, James Harris.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at Westover Funeral Home, in Des Moines, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
