Obituary

Cleo Fred Murphy, age 90, of Johnston, Iowa passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family -- the people he cherished most in this world.

Born on November 3, 1934, in New York City to Cleo and Laura (Beinbudel) Murphy, Cleo’s journey began with East Coast roots but truly blossomed in Des Moines, where he grew up near Waveland Golf Course. He attended Roosevelt High School, where his talent knew no bounds -- he was a standout athlete in both football and baseball, and also played clarinet in the marching band, a reflection of the many sides to Cleo.

Cleo went on to attend the University of Iowa, proudly earning a starting spot on the football team his freshman year. After an injury changed his path, he transferred to Cornell College, where he continued to shine on the football field and baseball diamond. But perhaps the most life-changing moment came in a classroom, when a teacher seated students alphabetically—and that’s how Cleo met Marilyn Murdy, the love of his life. They married in 1958, and together built a life full of laughter, love, and meaningful traditions.

Cleo’s professional life was dedicated to the insurance industry, where he worked in marketing for several prominent companies, including Equitable of Iowa and American Republic. But it wasn’t just his work that made an impact—it was Cleo’s warmth, his charisma, and his genuine interest in others. He had an extraordinary gift for connection and made everyone he met feel seen and valued. At Brio, he endeared himself to residents and staff alike with his kindness and humor.

Summers meant family adventures to Door County, Wisconsin -- days filled with boating, hiking, camping, and beachside memories that will live on for generations. Cleo was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan and an avid golfer, often teeing off in his favorite spots in Wisconsin and Florida. He adored his nine grandchildren and created a treasured tradition by taking each one on a special “10-year-old” trip -- making lifelong memories with Grandpa and Grandma.

Cleo was also a founding member of Windsor United Methodist Church in Des Moines, where his faith, service, and community spirit were constant threads throughout his life.

To know Cleo was to love him. He brought joy, generosity, and a twinkle of mischief wherever he went. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and everyone lucky enough to have shared in his journey.

Survivors include daughter Linda (John) Waldron, son Bruce (Kerrie) Murphy, grandchildren Luke, Courtney Branden, Lauren, Ashleigh, Laura, Benjamin, Meridith & Carolyne, and 13 great grandchildren. Cleo was preceded in death by wife Marilyn Kay (Murdy) Murphy, parents Cleo & Laura, sisters Dolores & Dorothy.

Cleo’s family will greet friends from 4:30pm till 5:00pm, Thursday, April 24, 2025, with a memorial service beginning at 5:00pm, at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa 50322.

Memorials may be directed to Windsor United Methodist Church or Wesley Hospice.
