Cliff Mattix, 84, of Des Moines passed away at home on Sunday, May 31, 2015. The family will receive friends at Iles Grandview Park Funeral Home from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 3 concluding with a 7:30 p.m. service. Private burial will be Thursday at Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Grinnell.

Cliff was born July 23, 1930 at home in Woodburn, IA to James and Freada (Weakland) Mattix. He moved to Des Moines in 1954 after serving with the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He purchased land and built his own home where he lived his remaining 60 years. He worked at a variety of jobs including designing campers at Kayot Manufacturing, and he retired from Canteen Vending Company in 1992. Following retirement he worked at Adventureland.

Cliff was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church and American Legion. He enjoyed square dancing and being a caller, especially since it was through dancing he met his wife, Ruth. He was devoted to caring for his family and will be remembered as a good man who touched many lives. He taught everyone who knew him through his actions, unconditional love, patience and hard work. He fought the good fight and met his reward.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 30 years, Ruth of Des Moines; two children, Ronald (Donna) Mattix of Sioux City and Jennifer (Eric) Johnston of Lebanon, PA; two step daughters, Jeanie (Jeff) Leonard of Des Moines and Rhonda (Andrew) Brackett of West Des Moines; adopted daughter, Kristine; seven grandchildren, Raeann Johnston of Lebannon, PA, Allanah Fenton of Pella and Tanner Fenton of Des Moines, and Madison, Allison, Elizabeth and Drew Brackett of West Des Moines; one great grandson, Hunter Daniel of Des Moines; sister, Edie Rumsey of Indianola; brother-in-law, Ron (Etha) Carson of Newton and several nieces and nephews.
