Dan Lee Boone passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, April 12, 2019. He was 69 years old.

A visitation will be held at 10 a.m. with a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, at Hopkins Grove United Methodist Church in Madrid. Inurnment will occur at a later date at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.

Dan was born on August 27, 1949, in Madrid, IA, the sixth of seven children of Eldon and Julia Boone. He was a proud lifelong resident of Madrid, graduating from Madrid High School in 1967. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1968 and served until 1972. He served as an avionics technician in Da Nang during the Vietnam War. On November 23, 1977, he married Patricia Shearer, and they had two sons, Nathan in 1978 and Squire in 1981.

Dan’s career spanned 30-plus years as a tire builder at Firestone before he retired in 2006. Until and including the day he passed, he volunteered in the VFW Color Guard at the funerals of local veterans. Dan took pride in his trip to Washington DC on a Boone County Freedom Flight in 2015.

Dan will be remembered as a loyal friend, a faithful patron of the Madrid VFW and the Boone Fareway meat counter, a meticulous (even competitive) tender of his - and others’ - lawns, and a consummate joker. His love language was food: If you were lucky, you found yourself on the receiving end of his renowned homemade bread, egg rolls, or caramel corn.

He was preceded in passing by his parents, his siblings Carol and Eldon Jr., and his father-in-law Harold. Left to cherish the memory of Dan are his wife, Patti; his son Nathan and wife Bethany Kohoutek and their children Strummer and Lola of Johnston, IA; son Squire and wife Amber of Brooklyn, NY; his sisters Julie Burke, Merris McIntosh, and Diane (Stewart) Walmsley; his brother Bill (Melba) Boone; and his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Shearer.

Memorials in his honor may be directed to the scholarship funds of the Madrid Beer Drinker’s Association or Star Lodge #115 A.F. & A.M., or AHeinz57 Pet Rescue. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
