Obituary

Senior Police Officer Daniel Allen Dusenbery, 64, a life-long resident of Des Moines and dedicated father, grandfather, mentor, Scoutmaster, friend, and Des Moines Police Officer left his earth to patrol the streets of heaven on March 29, 2014.

Dan grew up in Des Moines, graduating from Des Moines Technical High School in 1968. He then attended Wartburg College in Waverly where he studied theology for a short time. Upon returning to Des Moines, Dan married Christine Peitzman. Dan worked for a time as a draftsman, also working at Armstrong Tire until becoming a Des Moines Police officer.

Always with a story to share, Dan worked tirelessly to not only to keep our streets and communities safe, but also be a friendly face to everyone. Filled with good cheer, sound advice, and true loving kindness, Dan did more than his fair share to make Des Moines the wonderful city that it is today. After retiring from the police department after 38 years of patrolling Des Moines, Dan dedicated himself raising funds for each Des Moines Police patrol car to be equipped with lifesaving AEDs.

Outside of police work, Dan was dedicated to his church, St. John's Lutheran Church, where he was often found washing dishes after Wednesday "Beloved Community" dinners, helping decorate the church for Christmas, and being a friendly fixture in services. Dan also served as the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 77 for a number of years, where he thought of each Scout as another of his sons.

A dedicated family man, Dan often insisted on family dinners, joyous holiday and birthday gatherings, and being an excellent role model for his children and grandchildren.

Dan is survived by his wife of 41 years, Chris, daughter Lyssa (Kurt) Hoffmann, daughter Jacki (Barry) Graham, and son, Brian, his sister Victoria Carver, and his grandchildren, Jakob & Abrielle Hoffmann, and Liam, Luke and Owen Graham, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Des Moines Police AED Fund at the Des Moines Police Credit Union or St. John's Lutheran Church in Des Moines.
