Obituary

Darrell Mommer, 86, passed away peacefully at home on December 15, 2010. Darrell was born February 3, 1924 in Sheldon, IA, the son of Charles Edward and Grace (Spangler) Mommer. He lived in Mobridge, South Dakota for a short while before returning to Sheldon. Darrell served in WWII in the US Navy as an Aviation Machinist's Mate before marrying Laverne Shannon in 1955. He graduated from Iowa Teacher's College (University of Northern Iowa) and received his master's degree from the Colorado State College in Greeley.

Darrell retired from East High School in Des Moines where he was employed from 1959 to 1986. He was a member of the West Gate-Adelphic Masonic Lodge #509 in Windsor Heights, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine and Shrine Band in Altoona and the Urbandale Community Adult Band. He was a charter member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Darrell enjoyed driving his 1931 Ford Cabriolet in parades around the metro Des Moines area. His greatest pride and glory were his five children and his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Laverne (Shannon) Mommer; five children; LaDee Piner of Wilmington, NC and husband, Wesley, LaMont Mommer of DeKalb, IL and wife, Joan, Lori Feiten of Prescott, WI and husband, David, LaRae Allard of Akron, IA and husband, Tim, Ric Mommer of Cupertino, CA and wife, Alicia, and his nineteen grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, December 19, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 20 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 3600 75th St. in Urbandale. Masonic rites will be accorded during the service. Interment will follow services at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions go to the Shriners Hospital for Children. Contributions may be mailed to: Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, 1100 Shriners Parkway, Altoona, IA 50009.
