Obituary

Darrell Mahlon Nelson, 86, passed from this life on Tuesday, September 5, 2006 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 8, at First Assembly of God Church in Des Moines, of which he was a member. Interment will follow at Resthaven Cemetery, in West Des Moines.

Darrell was born on October 12, 1919 in Des Moines, Iowa to Arthur and Rose (Erickson) Nelson. He was a 1938 graduate of East High School in Des Moines. On October 31, 1942, Darrell married Ruth Geneva Osher and they made their home in West Des Moines. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a flight engineer on a B-29. Darrell was formerly employed as a carpenter with Newman, Weitz, Brieholtz, Boss Hotels and First Federated Church.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his four children, Larry of Windsor Heights, Rick of Suwanee, GA, Diane of Des Moines and Sheryl Lee of Burlington, IA; one brother, A.W. "Wally" Nelson of Des Moines; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ruth Nelson.

The family will greet friends for two hours from 12 p.m. until the service hour on Friday, September 8, at the church in the Palmer Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to First Assembly of God Church, to be directed to help both The Royal Ambassadors (Seniors’ Ministries) and the Food Pantry.
