David Earl Hay 87, died 27 March at Golden West retirement community in Boulder, Colorado. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, 8 May at 11:00 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, Des Moines, Iowa following a private family interment ceremony.

David, the youngest of four children, was born on March 7, 1923 in Des Moines, Iowa to Earl Downing and Bessie (Whipp) Hay. The family moved to Laramee, Wyoming where David's father was Dean of the engineering school and then to Lawrence, Kansas where David spent most of his formative years. He graduated from Lawrence Memorial High School in 1941. His studies at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas were interrupted by military service where he was a Navy Hellcat fighter pilot in WW ll. This fostered a profound and enduring love of flying. He graduated in 1949 with a BS Degree and remained a loyal KU fan for the rest of his life. On 23 August, 1947 he married Mary Jean (Deedie) Cramer who preceded him in death in 2002.

David is survived by his three sons Jon (Sue) of Pineville, Louisiana, Thomas (Sandy) of Boulder, Colorado and Stephen of Des Moines, Iowa and four grandchildren Eric, Ryan, Rachael and Alex.

David was a general contractor heading the firm, David E. Hay, Inc. Among his notable achievements was working with Frank Lloyd Wright on the construction of a private residence in Johnston, Iowa. He was an avid sports enthusiast and absolutely loved golf. David was an Eagle Scout and became very active in Troop 61 at Grace Methodist Church in the '60s. In addition he was a past member of the Y's Mens organization, Kiwanis, Acanthus Lodge, Isaac Walton League, and various committees at Grace United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace United Methodist Church and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America.
