Obituary

David Julian Erbes was born May 3, 1957 to Mary (Anderson) and Charles Erbes. He passed away at home surrounded by family September 20, 2022 due to complications from cancer.

David grew up in Mendota, Illinois and graduated from Mendota High School. He went on to attend the University of Illinois and Drake University Law School (graduated 1984). While attending law school, he met Jennifer Nielsen. They were married in August of 1984. David and Jennifer welcomed two sons, Grant (1987) and Neil (1989).

David practiced law in the Des Moines area for over twenty years. He left his law practice and went on to work for Lowes in a number of positions.

David was a member and board participant of several organizations over his lifetime: Westminster Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge, Blue Lodge (Mendota IL), Bloomington Consistory, Tebala Shrine, Civic Music Association, Oak Leaf Hockey parents association, Johnston High School Band Parents Association and most recently, Green Meadows West Homeowners Association. A fellow board member remarked, "Dave had a great smile and an easygoing personality that could calm any situation."

David was a man with many interests, which made him a great partner, father and friend. He enjoyed travel, the arts, fishing and hunting. But the joys of music and gardening were his passions throughout his life. He was an excellent vocalist, spending many years singing in the church choir as well as playing trombone. He was always interested in plants and plant adventures took he and Jennifer to many gardens at home and abroad.

David and Jennifer were married for 38 years. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, sons, Grant (Anna Jaeger), son, Neil and grandson, Bryan Erbes, mother, Mary Erbes, sister, Julie Erbes-Pierce (Jeff Pierce) as well as other loving family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Charles and infant daughter, Elizabeth.

Services will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Ave., Des Moines, IA. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am. Lunch will immediately follow the service in the Commons. Private interment will be held at a later date at Restland Cemetery, Mendota, IL.
