DeAnn Jones Obituary

DeAnn Lynette Jones, 72, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma died March 5, 2024 at Bellevue Nursing Home in Oklahoma City. She was born September 9, 1951 in Des Moines, Iowa to Bert L. & Adeline C. (Sanden) Jones.

DeAnn graduated from Urbandale High School and then Moorhead State College in Social Work. Her career in social work revolved around “Child Advocacy”, whether it be on their behalf as spokesperson, or teaching them to stand up for themselves. At the age of 26 she was a director at the Goodland Indian Academy in Hugo, Oklahoma. In 1981 she established the Foster Care Review Board in Des Moines, Iowa. This pilot program was implemented in other states as a result of her hard work. She invested herself both politically and emotionally.

While raising her son, Wyatt Jones, he was with her through her career path in varied locations. While living at some facilities they participated in those community activities as well as camping, mushroom hunting, gardening, football, and moonlight walleye fishing in Minnesota.

In 1998 DeAnn was diagnosed with endometrial cancer and given 1 year to live. She survived for 26 more years. Her family remembers her as a free spirit and open minded to mankind’s differences. DeAnn had a full and accomplished life.

Survivors include son Wyatt (Jessica) Jones, granddaughter Jorna Jones, sister JJ Davis, and grand dog Scout Jones. She was preceded in death by her parents Bert & Adeline Jones.

A memorial service will begin at 11:00am, Saturday, July 20, 2024 at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa 50322. A reception will follow the service where the family will visit with friends.
