Obituary

Delores K. Scott passed away on Monday, July 4, 2005 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, July 7 at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ with burial to follow at Woodland Cemetery.

Delores was born in the hardscrabble year of 1936. Blizzards dominated the winter and heat savaged the summer. Poverty was everywhere, but as they used to say, everybody was poor so no one considered himself particularly bad off. She early on acquired a work ethic before anyone called it that. Work was needed to survive and hard work was required to excel. She excelled.

She went from farm chores to valedictorian of her high school class; on to an Associates Degree in education in two years, while working hard as a secretary; and on to a Bachelor's Degree in three more years while working full-time as a Teacher. She graduated with honors.

She loved teaching and it was hard for her to quit, but she did, in order to become a full-time mother.

Her first-born child died at the age of one month. Many would have been discouraged. She was not. Maternity became the most important thing in her life and she was blessed with four more children who she nourished and hovered over. She was like a mother bird and the kids thrived.

When the children were grown, she went back to work as a word processor and became a supervisor. Her grammar, spelling, and punctuation were superb, so she could have been disliked, as a perfectionist frequently is; but she was not obnoxious, did not rub it in, and as a consequence, was loved and respected.

For the last nine years, she has fought Lymphoma with toughness and valor. She lost, but she gave it her best. Her compassion and grace will be sorely missed. May she rest in peace.

Delores is survived by her husband of 46 years, Jim; daughters, Cindy Howe of Des Moines and Sandra Scott of Franklin, TN; sons, Jim Scott of Norwalk, IA and Robert Scott of Des Moines; sisters, Donna Olsem of West Des Moines and Dorothy Bowers of Des Moines; and grandchildren, Ryan, Evan, Eric, Jimmy, Nick, and Brianna. Delores was predeceased by one child, Debbie and her parents Dean and Catherine Moore.

Visitation will be this evening from 5 to 8 p.m. at Westover Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
