Obituary

Dennis “Denny” Storey passed away on May 18, 2023 at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines.

Denny was born on October 18, 1944 in Des Moines to John and Helen (Alden) Storey, and eventually moved to and graduated from Johnston in 1963. He graduated from Iowa State University, where he was a full scholarship letter winner football player and earned his degree in Industrial Engineering. He was married to Deborah Hall on June 17, 1966, and had three children: Scott, Jeff, and Melissa.

He was always an extremely hard worker, developing his knowledge and salesmanship from his experience at John Deere, Gibbs-Cook, Ziegler Caterpillar, and eventually starting his own heavy machinery business, D. Storey Inc in 1988. He was very proud to make his business a family business, eventually including both sons and son-in-law into the company. He also shared his experience in construction as a member of the condo board he served at his home in Johnston. His faith was essential and he was member of NorthPoint Church in Johnston, and previously Meredith Drive Reformed Church in Des Moines. He was also an active member of the Iowa State Letter Winner’s Club.

Denny took great pride in the care of his home, rarely needing professional repairs. He kept his yard immaculately, and rarely came upon a problem that he could not find a solution for. He also loved to share his tools, his insight, his life experiences, and his help to family and friends. He loved all his children’s and grandchildren’s activities, coaching and cheering them along. Denny and Deb took many trips, but especially loved Vail, Colorado, returning nearly every summer or fall to enjoy the music of a local piano composer and friend.

Survivors include Deborah, his wife of nearly 57 years; his children: Scott (Kristi) of West Des Moines; Jeff of Grimes; Melissa (Dave) Gourley of Johnston; grandson’s: Drew, Jacob, Joel, Sam, and Nick; siblings: Dave (Linda), and Kate Stall; and several nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, and mother-in-law, Phyllis Hall.

Denny is best remembered for his persistence, faith, devotion, and faithfulness to family and friends.

Celebration of life services will take place on June 1, 2023 at 11am at NorthPoint Church in Johnston. The family will greet guests at 10am prior to the service. There will be a private graveside service at Highland Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to NorthPoint Church.

For those unable to attend, the Celebration of Life service will be livestreamed. A link will appear, just prior to the service, on Denny’s obituary page at www.ilescares.com, where you may also leave online condolences.
