Denver "Dean" Fortune, 80, of Altoona, IA passed away peacefully at home on January 17, 2022.

Dean was born in Lucas County, Iowa to Denver D. and Wilma (Cook) Fortune on September 29, 1941. He was united in marriage September 11, 1965 with his life-long partner Kathryn Kay Kirkpatrick. They were blessed with 3 children. Dean retired after being employed by the City of Des Moines at the Wastewater Treatment Plant for 33 years as an operator. He was a hard-working, knowledgeable, dedicated, and loyal man in all aspects of his life. He was also very talented, especially when it came to bowling and pitching horseshoes. He was a member of Iowa Hawkeye Horseshoe Pitchers Association (IHHPA). He enjoyed being outdoors, camping, fishing, and coaching. He coached youth baseball at Fairgrounds Little League, coached youth bowling, . Dean enjoyed watching college sports on TV including the Iowa Hawkeyes & Iowa State Cyclones. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs Baseball Team. Much of his spare time was spent collecting and operating his Lionel Trains for family and friends. He also enjoyed his fish aquarium and his kitty cat. He always looked forward to visits from friends, family, the kids, and grandkids.

Dean is survived by his wife Kathryn; children Michelle, Denver, and James; grandchildren Sylvia (Paul) Bright, Steven Johnson, Cassie Fortune, Jeremy (Casey) Young, and Rachel Young; 9 great-grandchildren, all of Des Moines, IA, sister Helen Bailiff of Des Moines, IA, sister Anita Dyer of Albuquerque, NM, brother Donald (Linda) Fortune of Des Moines, IA. Also, many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Dean was quite the character, you always knew where you stood with him as he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind. At times he could seem gruff on the exterior but he truly had a heart of gold. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Dean's family invites you to join them in remembering Dean on Sunday, January 23rd from 2 to 4 PM at the Iles Grandview Park Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be the following morning, Monday, January 24th at 10:00 AM.

The Family of Dean Fortune invites you to join them for a luncheon at Now or Later Restaurant, 3750 E University Ave, Des Moines following the burial at Laurel Hill.
