Doloris Friedman Rosenberg died Tuesday, November 9, 2010, after a brief illness. "Dee," as she was known to all, would have celebrated her 93rd birthday on December 3rd.

Dee graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1936, and from the University of Iowa in 1939. She met her beloved Herbert the first week of her freshman year at Iowa; they married in 1940 and shared a happy and loving life together for nearly 65 years before his death in 2005.

Dee worked for 18 months as a social worker after graduation. She was a fulltime homemaker and mother for the next 17 years. In 1958, she completed coursework at Drake University and was certified to teach. For the next 25 years, Dee taught kindergarten in the Des Moines Public Schools—the majority of those years she was at Moore Elementary School. She was a member of Temple B'nai Jeshurun and taught in the religious school there for many years, as well. She was adored by her students and their parents alike and she always enjoyed her conversations with any child she met.

Dee had many interests and hobbies. While she did not share Herb's overwhelming passion for golf, she patiently listened to the tales of his latest adventures on the golf course and she joined him in enthusiastically cheering on Iowa's football teams. Dee played both maj jongg and bridge for most of her adult life, except those years when she was teaching full time. She knit and she painted ceramics; she was fascinated with learning about antique pieces of all kinds and was an active member of Questors for many years. She was an avid reader who followed politics and local and world news—she even cast a ballot in the recent elections. Her curiosity about people and events never left her and she had a delightful sense of humor and a warm and welcoming smile for everyone.

She is survived by her daughters, Rosalind Rosenberg of Arlington, VA and Marsha Rosenberg Sullivan of Alexandria, VA; her son-in-law, Timothy Sullivan; and by her two grandchildren, Eileen and Hugh Sullivan. Services and interment will be at 1 p.m., Sunday, November 14th, at Jewish Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines, IA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: National Jewish Health (formerly National Jewish Medicine and Research), 1400 Jackson Street, Denver, Colorado 80206, ( or 1-800-222-LUNG) or to a charity of your choice.
