Donald Dean Dowell, 85, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2014, peacefully at his home.

Don was born in Benton, Iowa on June 30, 1929. He graduated from Diagonal High School and continued on to work for Hy-Line Poultry and Pioneer Hy-Bred Seed.

Don was married to the love of his life, Evelyn Laura Linkvis on April 21, 1948; they were married 66 years.

Don enjoyed fishing and hunting, auctioning and collecting. Woodworking and carpentry were some of his greatest talents that extended beyond family and friends into the community. Don especially enjoyed playing and spectating sports-specifically watching his children and grandchildren. Storytelling and recollecting were some of his greatest gifts and many of the family's favorite memories. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends and family. Further, he was actively involved in volunteering around Waukee in various booster clubs, neighborhood clubs, and attended Waukee Christian Church.

Don is survived by his wife Evelyn, three children, Ivan "Ike" (Sharon) Dowell of Piedmont, OK, Denise (Hal) Patterson of Walkerton, IN and Dennis (Marilyn) Dowell of Waukee; nine grandchildren, Jeff Patterson, Kevin Patterson, Nicole Wasteney-Scott, Erin McMurtrey, Heidi Stan, Tammy Linback, Matthew Dowell, Laura Dowell, and Tyler Patterson; three great-grandchildren, Camden Linback, Carson McMurtrey, and Bexley Stan; his sister, Patricia Sobotka as well as other extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irvin and Edna Dowell; his siblings, Ivan Dowell, Orville Dowell, Mary Mae Stevens, Betty Trimble and Marge Yashack; and his grandson, Jackson McMurtrey.

The family will receive friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Monday, July 14, at Waukee Christian Church. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Waukee Christian Church with burial to follow at the Waukee Cemetery.
