Obituary

Don Houk, 60, passed away suddenly January 20, 2010. He will be best remembered for his incredible humor, bold laugh and huge smile. He had a rare sense of optimism and a great love for his family, friends and animals.

A visitation will be held to honor Don's life at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa, 50322 from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, January 24, 2010.

Don was born September 16, 1949 to Gertrude (Peterson) and Duane Houk in Des Moines, Iowa. He was an incredible athlete in his youth and was Lincoln High School's star basketball player. He went to college in Greely, CO and then returned to his hometown, where he would spend the rest of his days with the love of his life, Sue. Don worked for most of his life as a carpenter- he was incredibly skilled and had a keen sense for detail. He was able to transform the most mundane homes into works of art, which he did on all of the houses he raised his family in and the homes his children would later purchase as their own.

Don was an avid collector of watches, memorabilia and just about anything vintage. He loved animals, travel, music and classic cars. He had the ability to make anyone laugh. He was an instant friend to everyone he encountered and always maintained a youthful spirit. He enjoyed spending time in Clear Lake, Iowa with his family and in San Francisco, California with his daughter and grandson.

Don is survived by his wife, Sue; sons, Brian and Kevin of Des Moines; daughter, Kristin of San Francisco, CA; grandson, Hudson; mother, Gertrude (Jean) and other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Duane; sister, Nancy and brother, Bill.
