Donald L. (Don) Neumann died November 24, 2022, at the age of 91.

Don was born November 30, 1930 in Des Moines, Iowa to Verna Neumann. Helping to raise him were his grandparents, Anna and Joe Swanson, and stepfather, Ralph Neumann. He attended Rice Elementary, Callanan Junior High and Roosevelt High School where he met his future wife, Charlotte Hess. Married in 1952, Don and Charlotte later welcomed children Kathi, Dirk, and Tim.

Don’s passions were church, sports and Y-Camp. In roles as deacon and elder at Westminster Church, Don formed lifelong friendships that continued through the years. Baseball and basketball figured prominently in Don’s years at Simpson College, Drake University, and his time in the Navy. He enjoyed coaching in Beaverdale Little League and the YMCA basketball league, and rarely missed a game or activity of his children and grandchildren. Y-Camp held a special place in his life, and he was very active as a camper, Family Camp Mayor, and Board member.

Don enjoyed a successful career with Drake University, initially as an employee. He continued as a volunteer in the athletic department as a statistician for football and the Drake Relays, and also as the head timer for men’s and women’s basketball. His greater than 50 years of service culminated with him receiving a “Double D Award.” Following his employment at Drake, Don went to work for the Iowa Medical Society. With IMS he served as Assistant Executive Vice President and General Manager and Managing Editor of Iowa Medicine. He helped form and grow the Iowa Physicians Mutual Insurance Trust until his retirement in 1993 at which time he and Charlotte enjoyed many travels. In retirement, Don was involved with Golden Kiwanis and was an active volunteer at Findley Elementary. Don was widely known for 20 years as editor of “Neu News,” a weekly family newsletter enjoyed by family and friends near and far.

Don was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Charlotte Neumann. He leaves behind their three children: Kathi Hansen (Bob) of Atlantic, Dirk Neumann (Maureen) of Danville, CA and Tim Neumann (Patty) of Johnston; eight grandchildren, Heidi (Matt), Kyle (Val), Hilary; Will (Mikaila), Brian (Jenna), Kathleen (Seth); Ryan (Carmen) and Kara (Mike); four great-grandchildren, Quinn Hansen, Jillian, Lydia and Melody Mertz. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Shirley Whitfield and her sons, Randy and Rod.

Sincere appreciation is expressed to Scottish Rite Park Health Care Center and Suncrest Hospice.
