Obituary

Donald Ray Betts turned 88 one week before he passed away on Friday, May 30, 2008. His family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, June 2 at Iles Funeral Homes- Grandview Park Chapel followed by a graveside service 2:30 p.m. Monday at Glendale Cemetery.

Don was born on May 23, 1920 in Lake Park, IA to Frank and Florence Betts. He grew up and resided in Ankeny for many years before moving to Des Moines.

Don served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a tank commander in General Patton's Fourth Armored Division. He was captured and was a German P.O.W. until liberated by American tanks on VE day. He received 27 medals including the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Don retired from John Deere Des Moines Works in 1983. After retirement he enjoyed traveling the country with his wife in their RV and spending winters down South. Most of all he enjoyed and loved his son, daughter and all of his grandchildren.

Left to celebrate Don's memory are his wife, Florence, the "Love of his Life" for 67 years; his two loving children, Donna (Gary) Dudney of Lorimor, IA and Larry (Dottie) Betts of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and one great great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters all of Ankeny. He will be missed by all.

Memorial contributions are being directed to V.F.W. Post 738.
