Dorothy Holbrook, 83, died Sunday, March 4, 2007 of complications related to cancer. Born in 1924 to Dorothy and John Robertson, she grew up in Baton Rouge, Gulfport, and New Orleans as her family followed her father’s construction business in projects along the Gulf Coast. Her father’s early death and her mother’s later remarriage brought her to Des Moines in 1941. Dorothy graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1942 and next attended the University of Missouri at Columbia, where she studied art and geography. In college, she was active in the Delta Delta Delta sorority, a group that brought her many life-long friendships. Returning to Des Moines after graduation, she married Howard Holbrook in 1949. Her first child, Nancy, was born in 1951, and shortly afterwards, they joined Howard as he was deployed to Maine with Iowa’s Air National Guard during the Korean War. They returned to Iowa after the war, where Dorothy’s life focused on family and friends, with a second child, Randy, being born in 1955. Howard died in 1975 and Dorothy continued her life in Des Moines, forever engaged in a strong community of friends and a wealth of personal interests. She loved to travel and visited Europe, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Northwest, as well as making frequent trips to Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. She was active in local antique groups, her church at Westminster Presbyterian, and a number of civic and volunteer organizations. Dorothy is survived by her daughter Nancy Walker and son in law Steve of Bettendorf, Iowa; her granddaughter Katherine Walker of Rochester, Minnesota and grandson Michael Walker of Fremont, Nebraska. Her son Randy Holbrook and daughter in law Jan live in Seattle with their sons Blake and Jack. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Red Cross for the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts, or Hospice of Central Iowa.

Visitation will be at Iles Funeral Homes - Dunn's Chapel on Wednesday, March 7 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Memorial services will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Thursday, March 8, at 2:30 PM.
