Obituary

Dorothy M. Nelson, 86, passed from this life on Monday, November 11, 2013, at Arbor Springs Care Center in West Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, November 15, at First United Methodist Church, located at 1001 Pleasant Street in Des Moines. Burial will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, at Carroll City Cemetery in Carroll, Iowa.

Dorothy was born on January 3, 1927, in Carroll, Iowa to Albert and Mary (Bedford) Nelson. She was a 1944 graduate of Lake City High School in Lake City, IA, where she was very active in band, shining as a talented French horn player. For two years, Dorothy had attended Drake University and later was a 1949 graduate of A.I.B. Business College, both in Des Moines. She was employed for many years as an accountant. Dorothy was a member of The Des Moines Press Club and an active member of the Scandinavian Club. She was also a member of First United Methodist Church, where Dorothy met her very dear friend and loving companion of whom she shared a home, Glenn H. Roberts. Dorothy enjoyed reading and studying her family history. She loved traveling with Glenn and they were both fortunate to experience memorable trips to England and Sweden. Dorothy will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her dear friend and loving companion, Glenn Roberts of Windsor Heights; one niece, Susan; one cousin, Elmer Bedford and his wife, Kathy of Carroll; and several extended cousins including, Patricia Gehling of Carroll, Karen Grote of Denver, CO, Frank Bedford of Indianhead Park, IL, Steve Bedford of Carroll, Mary Osdoba of Minnesota Lake, MN, Joe Bedford of San Diego, CA, Barbara Krist of Bennington, KS, Monica Riordan of Salina, KS and Brenda Kroeker of Solomon, KS. Dorothy was preceded into eternal life by her parents; brother, Bernard Nelson; and two close cousins, Luella (Bedford) Grote and Richard Bushman.

The family will greet friends from 1 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, November 14, at Iles Westover Chapel in Des Moines.

Glenn would like to express his heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to one of Dorothy's special cousins, Karen Grote and her husband, John Sadwith for all their love, care and support during her illness.
