Obituary

Douglas Craig Martin, 75, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2020, at UnityPoint Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Doug was born in Des Moines on August 24, 1944, to Ralph W. and Nellie E. (Phelps) Martin and was the youngest of the three Martin children. He loved his brother Brandon and sister Karen dearly. Doug looked up to Brandon and followed in his footsteps delivering newspapers as a boy. He adored Karen whose nurturing instincts no doubt kept him from excess mischief.

Doug attended North High School in Des Moines before graduating from Colfax High School in 1962 where he enjoyed singing in the choir and was a member of the basketball team. Doug graduated from Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa in 1966 and then moved to Cresco, Iowa where he spent his education career teaching biology from 1966 to 1987 at Crestwood High School. It was during those years in Cresco that Doug met and married his first wife Phyllis and from that union, they were blessed with a son and daughter, Cory and Amy.

Doug was an engaging teacher and had a hunger for learning throughout life. Doug's keen interest in technology paired with his heart for education led him to join Apple Computer, Inc. in 1987 as an account executive for K-12 education, a career move that took the family to Johnston, Iowa. Doug studied photography and captured lasting memories for his clients from weddings to event photography such as show choir, drama, and musicals. Doug also enjoyed photographing high school basketball games when his favorite teams were playing, cheering them on from behind the camera.

After returning to the Des Moines area, Doug met his forever love, Maggie. They made a home together in Des Moines and enjoyed gardening, traveling, visiting friends and family, and working together in Doug's photography business.

Doug was an amateur radio operator, music enthusiast, volunteer in the community, and friend to everyone. Though Doug is now a silent key and N0AXW has gone 73, we will fondly remember his warm heart, ready smile, and vibrant sense of humor. Above all, he delighted in his grandchildren Carli, Corinna, Caleb, Isaiah, and Ben and cherished hearing about their interests and attending their activities when he could.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Maggie Holland; son Cory Martin and his wife Cassie of Celina, Texas; daughter Amy Burke and her husband Joshua of Waukee, Iowa; grandchildren Carli Martin, Corinna Martin, Caleb Burke, Isaiah Martin, and Ben Martin; stepdaughter Nikki Berg and her husband Ryan of Rosemount, Minnesota; stepson Bill Holland and his wife Janis of Clive, Iowa; brother Brandon Martin and his wife Pat of Tinley Park, Illinois; sister Karen Taul of Muncie, Indiana; three step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren; nine siblings-in-law; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

A private memorial service will be held Saturday, June 27, 2020, at Westover Chapel in Des Moines, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
