Obituary

Doug (Douglas) Edward Langworthy, 46, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 10, 2023, in Des Moines, Iowa. He will be dearly missed for his love of life. It was impossible not to be happy when Doug was around making others laugh and giving the best hugs.

Doug redefined family, fatherhood and what it means to be a good person. His joyous spirit brought fun and light everywhere he went and there is a gaping hole in our hearts that only he could fill. He adored his wife and daughters, and it was always clear how present, patient and gracious he was with them. He truly loved life.

Doug enjoyed fishing, hunting, painting, art, music, gardening, cheering on the Vikings and being with family and friends. He was always telling jokes, laughing and sharing movie quotes even if it was just funny to himself, like when he made up phrases like “haps in the craps.” Affectionately known as “Dougie,” he could never turn down an ask to go fishing - even if it meant single-handedly untangling fishing lines and putting bait back on hooks for hours at a time with his nieces and nephews.

It is fitting that Doug was born on Christmas day, December 25, 1976, in Perry, Iowa, to Edward and Carla (Vail) Langworthy. He had a big incredible family and his love for them showed all the time. He graduated from Johnston High School in 1996 and married Shannon Murray on September 10, 2010. Doug lived in Urbandale with his wife and daughters, Kaya and Iris. He worked as a painter for 30 years. He always said how blessed he was to work with both his dad and brother Chad.

Doug is survived by his wife, Shannon, two daughters Kaya (17) and Iris (13); his parents, Ed and Carla of Grimes; his sisters and their partners, Tanya Mart and Dave Cosgriff of Johnston; Shannon and Bob Sellner of Grimes; Mary Langworthy-Berber and Marco Berber of Grimes; Candice Langworthy and Keith Ratliff of Grimes; and his brother Chad Langworthy and Andrea Viera of West Des Moines. He will be missed greatly by many friends and family including his nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws who all loved him dearly.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at Iles Dunn’s Chapel. Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 16 at the same location. Feel free to wear bright colors and come as you are - just as Doug would like you to be. The service will be livestreamed at the bottom of Doug’s obituary on IlesCares.com where online condolences are also welcome. A GoFundMe memorial account has been set up in Doug’s honor to help ease the financial burden on his family: https://gofund.me/b1c6c837. Thank you for helping support Shannon and the girls at this time.
