Obituary

Dr. Marilee Uhlenhopp Fredericks, 77, passed away at her home on February 3 with her beloved schnauzer, Misty, at her side. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, February 6 at Dunn’s Funeral Home located at 2121 Grand Avenue, Des Moines. Burial will be held at the Hampton Cemetery on Tuesday the 7th at 11 a.m.

Marilee was born in Aredale, Iowa to Dick and Oma Allen Uhlenhopp November 13, 1928. She graduated from Hansell High School in 1945. She later married Lt. Dean Edward Fredericks of Hansell, on December 15, 1951 in Selma, Alabama. Lt. Dean Fredericks was killed July 4, 1952 while serving with the United States Air Force in Korea.

Marilee’s post high school education began when she was 16 years old at Iowa State Teachers College. She then obtained her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Oregon. Marilee began her work at the Des Moines Child Guidance Center In 1958. She was the Director at the facility for 36 years, retiring in 1993. Marilee was a member and past President of the Central Iowa Psychological Association, Child/Clinical American Psychological Association, Community Mental Health Center Association, and also served 13 years on the Iowa State Mental Health/Developmental Disabilities Commission. She was recognized many times for her accomplishments, including the M. Opal Fore Award in 1995 where she was described as a "consultant, teacher, author, and mentor."

Marilee will be remembered for her integrity, good times with her family (including competitive card games, scrabble, Iowa games, holidays in her home, her much-loved schnauzers) and her outstanding achievement in the area of community health. She has "set a high standard for those who would follow in her footsteps."

Marilee was preceded in death by her husband; mother; father; father-in-law, Edward Fredericks; a brother, Allen D. Uhlenhopp. She is survived by her mother-in-law, Ardis Fredericks of Hampton; sister-in-law, LaVaughn Uhlenhopp of Mason City; sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Hannah of Rock Creek, Ohio; a foster sister, Carolyn Carlstrom of Poway, California; Gordon and Marietta Brocka of Aredale; niece, Lynn (Rich) Reed; niece, Mary Kay Willson; nephew, Mark (Janece) Uhlenhopp; niece, Kay Hannah; nephew, Michael Hannah; niece, Susie Kochy; niece, Cindy Rossi; and their children and grandchildren.

A memorial fund has been established for the Des Moines Child Guidance Center.
