Obituary

R. Scott Frey passed away on December 24, 2018, after a brief hospitalization at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Scott was born February 28, 1951, in Osceola, Iowa, to Patricia and Robert Frey. Scott was married to Sara Jane “Sally” Scott, on September 26, 1970, in Creston, Iowa. They were happily married for 48 years.

Scott received his Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Sociology from Northwest Missouri State University in 1973 and continued his education by receiving his Master of Arts in Sociology from Drake University in 1976. Scott completed his PhD in Sociology from Colorado State University in 1980.

He began teaching in 1980 at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He continued his teaching career at several schools including Kansas State University, University of North Florida, and most currently at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He developed 35 different courses in his career as a professor, as well as serving on 58 MA and PhD committees.

He was a prolific writer and researcher, publishing 4 books and 59 journal articles, book chapters, and movie reviews. He presented numerous papers at professional meetings and other venues. Scott traveled extensively in pursuit of continuing his academic endeavors, including trips to China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Russian Federation, and Cuba.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert B. Frey. He is survived by his loving wife, Sally; his mother, Patricia Reynoldson; son, Stuart Che (Noel DePhillips) Frey; grandchildren; Logan, Rylee, and Aidan; sister RaeAnne (Mark) Marner; brother Mark (Mona) Frey, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 2, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, IA, 50322, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m.
