Obituary

Dr. W. Nick Palmer, age 55, of Windsor Heights, went home to be with the Lord on September 21, 2009, with his loving family and friends by his side.

Nick was born in Des Moines, IA on January 20, 1954, to Bill and Evelyn (Johnson) Palmer. Nick grew up on the Eastside of Des Moines and was a proud graduate of Des Moines East High School. Nick received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Drake University. He then attended the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery and went on to complete a three year Family Practice Residency at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, IA, where he was voted Chief Resident by his peers.

In 1982, Dr. Palmer opened Pleasant Hill Family Practice as well as satellite clinics in the communities of Ankeny and Mitchellville. During this time, Dr. Palmer was also the Director of SHARE HMO and Medical Director for the Women's Correctional Facility in Mitchellville.

Dr. Palmer endured years of pain and suffering as a result of Crohn's Disease. In 1990, his health no longer allowed him to practice medicine full-time. This, however; did not prevent him from caring for the patients who had also become his friends. From his life experiences Dr. Palmer learned compassion that cannot be taught in medical school. In 1997, he was able to pursue the passion of his life which was to provide free healthcare to those in need. At the time of his death he was the Director of the Jim
Ellefson Free Medical Clinic.

In his free time he enjoyed traveling, cooking, collecting baseball cards, watching the New York Yankees and the Green Bay Packers as well as being an avid car enthusiast. Nick's greatest love was his wife, Val, of 34 years, his children Nicholas and Hannah and his faithful companion, Willie. He was forever the encourager always having time to send a card or note to cheer up those he cared for.

Along with his wife and children, those left to honor his memory include his father, Bill (Evadna) Palmer of Pleasant Hill, IA; his mother, Evelyn (Wayne) Roquet of Jupiter, FL; brother, Tony of Peoria, AZ; sister, Amanda (Brian) King of Gilbert, AZ; father and mother-in-law, Charles "Lindy" and Linda Brown of Clive, IA. His loving nieces and nephews as well as many extended family members and friends. Nick was preceded in death by his grandparents Wayne and Lillian Johnson and George and Florence Palmer.

Family will greet friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, September 24, at NewLife Church, 6036 N.E. 12th Ave., Pleasant Hill, IA of which he was a partner. Services will be on Friday, September 25, at 1:00 p.m., also at NewLife Church.
