Dr. William F. Vance, 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at the Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines. Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

A long-time Des Moines area dentist, Dr. Vance enjoyed his retirement years fishing, golfing, bowling, playing bridge and enjoying family and friends. He served honorably in the Eighth Air Force during WWII, completing 25 missions as an original member of the 381st bomb group and earning the Certificate of Valor. Dr. Vance was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the University of Iowa Alumni Association. He had a courageous spirit that will remain an inspiration to his family and friends.

He is survived by his two daughters, Phyllis Vance and her husband Robert Davis of West Des Moines and Diana Vance-Bryan and her husband Kyle of Maplewood, MN; five sisters, including Bonnie Clift and Mary Lou Larsen, both of Des Moines; two grandchildren; and a host of other loving relatives. Dr. Vance was preceded into eternal life by his wife, Mary Lucille (Koch) Vance on April 26, 2003 and two brothers.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Westover Funeral Home, where a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Kavanagh Hospice House in Des Moines.
