Earl Michael ("Mick") Donahue, Jr. died in his sleep at his home on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012. Mick was born in Des Moines on April 30, 1923, the third child of Earl M. and Reva Harrington Donahue. He attended St. John's grade school and Dowling High School, graduating with the class of 1941. After high school, Mick served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II, being stationed for various periods in Texas, Illinois, and California. While in high school, he met and dated Darlene M. Schnoebelen, and the two were later married in Sherman, Texas on February 26, 1944.

After the war Mick attended Drake University, graduating in 1948 with a degree in business administration. Thereafter, he was employed in various management positions in the truck transportation business for Merchants Motor Freight and eventually H & W Motor Freight, the company from which he retired in 1987.

Mick loved sports. He was an excellent high school athlete, playing as a guard on Dowling's basketball team and also a standout first baseman on the school's baseball team, earning all-city honors in those sports for two and three years, respectively. As a junior, he helped Dowling win the state Catholic School basketball title, going on to compete in the national Catholic High School championship held in Chicago. In driving past Goode Park in Des Moines recently he remarked that he must have played a thousand baseball games there as a teenager. As an adult he had a long career officiating basketball and football games, plus served as the president of the Officials Association for many years. Mick enjoyed years of Saturdays as a member of the chain crew for the Iowa State Cyclones. He coached middle school basketball at Holy Trinity where his kids attended school and loved watching all the boys he coached grow up. Mick was an avid Dowling supporter and whether it was from the outfield fence or high in the stands, he enjoyed watching, and sometimes coaching, the Maroons. As recently as last month Mick was registering visitors to Dowling Catholic as a greeter, a job he truly enjoyed. He was a proud member of the Dowling Catholic High School and B'Nai B'Rith athletic Halls of Fame.

Surviving are three children, Judith Donahue Dwyer (Jack) of Des Moines, Michael Donahue (Glenna) of Denver, Colorado, and Thomas Donahue (Melanie) of Des Moines, grandchildren, Ryan Donahue, Colin Donahue, Geraldine Dwyer, Allison Donahue, Michael Donahue, Lauren Donahue, and Conor Donahue. He is also survived by his sister, Aloyse Dowie and brother, Jack Donahue, both of West Des Moines, plus many in-laws, nieces and nephews. Mick was preceded in death by his beloved wife Darlene in 2000, and sister, Reva Ann.

Though we will miss him, we are comforted that Mick and Darlene are together again.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Vigil Service, on Thursday, May 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1627 Grand Avenue, West Des Moines, IA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 1 at the church, with private burial at Glendale Cemetery.
