Elizabeth (Betty) Webster played her last game of bridge this past Thanksgiving Day, November 28, a fitting day for the memory of our favorite Des Moines cook. She rallied briefly after suffering a serious stroke on October 23rd, but then contracted pneumonia. She came home to her comfortable, sunlit apartment in the Wesley Bolton and was attended by her children: Susan, Catherine, Elizabeth and Bennett Webster. Betty's devoted and tireless caretaker, Deb Grenko, was by her side providing loving care. Betty's grandson, Michael Totten, and her niece, Randi Johnson, arrived from Los Angeles on Thanksgiving evening to say their goodbyes.

Betty's husband, Bennett Webster, of 54 years pre-deceased her in 2002. Apart from raising four wildly different and challenging children, Betty was devoted to the Des Moines community. A tireless volunteer, she co-chaired the United Way Campaign with Madgil Herring, was active in the assorted PTAs, and chaired Julia Gentleman's successful campaigns for the Iowa House and Senate. Her life-long and greatest community service was to Planned Parenthood of the Heartland. She served on the board and was chairman of the renowned book sale--a book lover's paradise--for two years and served as a volunteer for 30 years.

Betty was born in 1925 in Greenville, Michigan, the youngest of four girls. She graduated from University of Michigan with a B.A. in economics.

She was an extraordinary party-giver, a snappy dresser and a bottomless source of recipes for her family and friends. She was an ardent gardener and a far-ranging reader who loved poetry, contemporary fiction and a good mystery.

Betty's memorial service will be held at Plymouth Congregational Church on Monday, December 2 at 11:30 a.m. A reception will follow at Betty's apartment: 405 37th Street # 203.

In lieu of flowers or condolences, Betty would wish donations be made to Planned Parenthood of The Heartland. This could include books, music and artwork to be given to the Bookworks at 123 Clark Street, Des Moines.
