Obituary

Eloise S. Richards, 94, passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at Scottish Rite Park, where she resided. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Scottish Rite Park Penthouse, 2909 Woodland Avenue, Des Moines. Private burial will be at Resthaven Cemetery Mausoleum, West Des Moines.

Eloise was born on December 7, 1915 in Springfield, Missouri, the daughter of Richard and Mae Smith. Eloise was a descendant of Matthew Thornton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. She graduated from Hempstead High School, Long Island, NY in 1933 and attended the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY. In 1940 she was united in marriage to Riley H. Richards in New York City. They moved to Des Moines in 1947. Eloise was a homemaker and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for over 50 years, H K Chapter of PEO, Des Moines Women's Club and AAUW. She was awarded Outstanding Woman of the Year in 1972 by the Des Moines Jayce-ettes. She was a community volunteer and enjoyed traveling and reading.

Eloise is survived by her son, Roy C. Richards (Gloria) of Clive, IA; daughter, Lynne Beck (Bruce) of Lake Elmo, MN; four grandchildren, Geoffrey Richards, Emily Cogburn (Jon), Army Captain Brian Beck (Angela) and Lauren Drewitz (Ryan) and her brother, Thornton R. Smith of Sun City West, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Riley in 2007 and a granddaughter, Navy Lieutenant Kristen Richards.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Good Life Fund at Scottish Rite Park or to a charity of donor's choice.
