Obituary

Elsie Gayer, 99, of Madrid, passed from this life on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at the Madrid Home in Madrid. A memorial service celebrating Elsie's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 25, in the Sanborn Memorial Chapel at the Madrid Home. A private family committal service will take place at the Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.

Elsie was born on March 26, 1915, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Niels and Jensene (Sorensen) Kammersgaard. From age 3, Elsie was raised and cared for by Carl and Laurine Paulsen and later adopted by them. She graduated from Audubon, IA, high school in 1934. On August 2, 1942, she was united in marriage to Robert Neil Gayer and two children were born to this union, Ken and Janis.

Elsie and Bob Gayer owned Gayer Pharmacy in Madrid for 28 years until they retired. A Camp Fire leader since the early 60's, Elsie was involved with that organization until her 80's including staying at Camp Hantesa. Her principle volunteer work included sewing for the Madrid Home, the Home gift shop, and the Greater Love Ministries. Traveling was very important to Elsie going first with Bob and, then, on his passing, with her sisters. Destinations included Alaska, Mexico, Panama Canal, Hawaii, Italy, Denmark and Finland, as well as much of the United States particularly wherever children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren lived. She continued to travel until her early 90's. Elsie's other interests included gardening, quilting, crocheting, and playing cards. Bob and Elsie were members of St. Paul's United Church of Christ. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her son Ken (Polly) Gayer of Tucson, AZ; daughter Janis (Bruce) Robinson of Knoxville, TN; three grandchildren, Charlotte (Paul) Ricci of Panama City Beach, FL; Jonathan (Lauren) Gayer and Kristine (Paul) Feist both of Albuquerque, NM; step-granddaughter, Allyson (Michael) Thompson of Goodyear, NM; six great-grandchildren, Kayla, Talia, Nicholas, Christian, Morgan and Ella; and several nieces and nephews. Elsie was preceded into eternal life by her parents, husband and sisters.

The family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to The Madrid Home – ACTS Fund.
