Elvan Lowe Spilka died on June 13, 2009, at the age of 87. He was born in Ft. Dodge, Iowa in 1922, and lived the majority of his life in Des Moines. He spent the preponderance of his professional career in various aspects of the insurance industry and earned a designation as a CPCU (Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters).

Mr. Spilka graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in Political Science. His studies were interrupted by a four-year term of military service in World War II, in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Mr. Spilka served as a member of the Board of Directors of Tifereth Israel Synagogue where he and his family were long-time members. He was also a member of Mensa.

Mr. Spilka was predeceased by his parents, Max and Rose Spilka, his brother Herb Spilka, and his wife of 45 years, Sylvia Spilka. He is survived by a son Max (Susan Fine) of Las Vegas, daughter Robbie Deveney (Sean) and grandson Brice Klein of Chicago, brother Seymour Spilka of New York, and sister Rita Nathanson of Minneapolis.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 16 Jewish Glendale Cemetery.
