Erma Norman died of congestive heart failure on March 20, 2005 at Heather Manor in Des Moines. Services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 23 at Westover Funeral Home.

Erma was born in 1917 to Orville and Bessie Overton. She was raised and spent her life in the Des Moines area. Erma was employed at Banker's Trust for many years and thoroughly enjoyed working with people.

In retirement, she took great pleasure in raising flowers and caring for the birds, squirrels and all the little animals that frequented her yard. She traveled occasionally but spent most of her time with her family. Erma loved being with family and was always a source of inspiration, knowledge and support.

In 1981, Erma's only daughter had unsuccessful brain surgery that left her in a coma. Erma took care of Barb every day for over three years until her death in 1984. Through this difficult time, Erma never questioned her faith in God and remained a model Christian throughout her life. Erma used her experience and her faith to help organize the first support group in Iowa for brain injury survivors and their families.

Erma was a charter member of Windsor Heights Methodist Church and contributed generously to many charities.

Erma was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Barbara Winchester. She is survived by her sister, Pauline Ketman of Overland Park, KS; son, John Sr. of Tallahassee, FL; Barb's sons, Troy (Debbie) Winchester and Chad Winchester, both of Des Moines; and John's sons, John Jr. (Deborah) of Orlando, FL, and Chuck of Tallahassee, FL. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Americn Cancer Society or Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
