Erwin John “Irvie” Arndt, 81, of Des Moines, formerly of Walnut, IA, passed from this life on Friday, March 10, 2006 at NBA-Ramsey Home in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 15th at Peace United Church of Christ, located at 404 North Street in Walnut. Visitation will be for two hours, from 11:00 a.m. until the service hour at the church on Wednesday. Burial will follow at Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, with military honors by the local AMVETS Post 45. The Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel in Des Moines is in charge of arrangements.

Irvie was born on September 22, 1924 to Albert and Hulda (Tegen) Arndt in Kennan, WI. He was a navy veteran during World War II, serving as an Electrician Mate 1st Class from 1942, until he was honorably discharged in 1946. Two of the ribbons Irvie had earned and had been authorized to wear were the American Theater of War and the Asiatic-Pacific with three stars. He had also been awarded two Certificates of Recognition of Service for serving during WWII, from both the State of Illinois and the Walnut AMVETS Post #45. Irvie became part of the United States Congressional Record in May of 2004.

He married Roma LaVonne Lehnhardt and they made their home in Walnut. For 53 years, Irvie was self-employed as an electrician and retired in 1996. He was a long time resident of Walnut, where Irvie was formerly active in various organizations, including serving on the Walnut Town Council for five years. He was a former Legion Commander for 4 years, volunteer fireman with the Walnut Fire Department, and was also a charter-member of the Optimist Club. Irvie had moved to Atlantic for only a brief time. In March of 2004, he then moved to Des Moines, to be near his daughter and granddaughter. Irvie was a caring, loving and kind father, grandfather and friend; he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his daughter, Karen Louise Dewinter of West Des Moines; granddaughter, Andrea Harper and her husband Tyler of Des Moines; three sisters, Ottielie Bratina of Ladysmith, WI, Dorothy Klink and her husband Roy of Sun Prairie, WI and Shirley Stratil and her husband Anthony of New London, WI; two brothers, Ralph Arndt and his wife Marion of Wisconsin and Roy Arndt and his wife Esther of Wauwatosa, WI; and a brother-in-law, Stanley Lehnhardt of Frisco, TX. Irvie was preceded in death by his wife, Roma Arndt; one granddaughter, April Dawn Dewinter; one brother, Alvin Arndt; one sister, Marie Sickles; son-in-law, Terry Dewinter; and one sister-in-law, Sue Lehnhardt.
