Esther Alvina Latta, 88, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Boone County Hospital in Boone. In agreement with her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service celebrating Esther's life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, at Iles Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel in Madrid. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, south of Madrid. Family and friends are invited to a light supper at the Madrid VFW Post 5060 located at 229 South State Street immediately following the burial.

Esther was born August 16, 1925 to Edward and Belle (Stenson) Tweedt. She was united in marriage to William Hart "Bill" Latta on October 31, 1945 and they made their home south of Madrid for nearly 65 years. They raised four daughters (and many pets) there. During World War II, Esther worked at the Ordnance Plant in Ankeny and later was secretary for several years for the White Hall country school located near their home. Esther was the last surviving charter member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 5060. She was a homemaker and devoted wife and mother.

Esther enjoyed gardening, canning, camping, cooking, fishing, bowling, crocheting, crossword puzzles and above all, time with her family. Early in their marriage, Bill and Esther traveled to more than 40 of the United States and enjoyed ballroom dancing, hosting card parties and many fish frys. In more recent years, Esther enjoyed going to casinos and other social events with her family and friends.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her four daughters, Carol (William) Woodlund, Christie (William) Charo, Claudia (Phil) Hanks, and Cherri (Stephen) Simmons; ten grandchildren, William Lopez, Carmen (Robin) Swank, Bradley (Tylee) Lopez, Cale Charo, Jolynne (Brandon) Carlson, Brook, Brittany, and Jacob Hanks, and Jared and Eric Simmons; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, M.L. "Larry" (Ruth) Tweedt; and one sister-in-law, Mary Tweedt; and many nieces and nephews. Esther was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; three brothers and two sisters.
