Esther Mae (Dryden) Farrell, 89, passed away at Bickford Cottage on September, 30, 2009. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 AM, Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Westover Funeral Home with funeral services beginning at 11 AM. Burial will be held at 1 PM, Sunday in Carroll, Iowa at the Carroll City Cemetery.

Esther Mae (Dryden) Farrell was born on January 28, 1920 to Burt and Lillie Dryden of Audubon, Iowa. Esther attended Audubon schools from kindergarten through senior year, graduating in 1938. While in school she played for the women's basketball team. She also loved to attend dances at nearby towns when the big bands were traveling through the area. After graduating from high school Esther, along with her sister, LaVonne, moved to Santa Monica, California to live with her oldest sister, Ollyvene. While living in the L.A. area she worked as a teller for Security Pacific Bank. She also played on a league basketball team, the Northrop Squad with her sister, LaVonne.

During her time in California she was reunited with Iowa boy Kenny Farrell of Carroll, Iowa, who was stationed in San Diego, California. They were united in marriage in 1951 at Forrest Lawn, Wee Kirk o' the Heather in Glendale, California. They moved back to Iowa to start their life together and to start a family. Kenny worked for the telephone company and was relocated to Iowa towns such as Nashua, Colfax, Corydon, Humboldt, and finally in 1965 to Urbandale, Iowa. By this time, Esther had given birth to two daughters, Jacqueline and Lori. For a short time Esther worked for the Urbandale School District and then took a job with Continental Insurance Company. In 1980, she and Kenny retired to travel and enjoy their time with their family. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She had a love for all animals and liked to travel.

For the past four and a half years, Esther has made her home at Bickford Cottage in Urbandale. Where she was surrounded with love and the greatest care a person could hope to receive.

Esther was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Kenny Farrell; her parents, Burt and Lillie Dryden and her sister and brother-in-law, Ollyvene and Dale Hoegh. She is survived by daughter, Jacque (Ron) Tate of Runnells, IA and daughter, Lori (Bill)
Kness of Urbandale, IA; granddaughters, Shannon Tate of Pleasant Hill, IA, Ashley Tate of Cedar Rapids, IA; grandson and granddaughter, Carson and Cali Kness of Urbandale, IA; sister and brother-in-law, LaVonne and Pete Oliver; nephew, Mark (Pat) Oliver and niece, Sue Oliver all of Coon Rapids, IA.
