Esther Morrison Galloway passed away peacefully at her home in Des Moines on December 13, 2010 at age 85, due to congestive heart failure.

Esther was born October 11, 1925 to Frank W. and Nancy "Babe" (Freland) Morrison in Good Thunder, Minnesota. Her father (who had been born in 1868) died suddenly in 1936 and the family farm was lost to foreclosure during the Great Depression. The surviving members of the family moved back to Rhodes, Iowa, but soon afterwards, the house they were living in burned with all their possessions. They then moved in with her grandmother, Sarah Freland.

During World War II Esther worked in Des Moines at the Iowa Department of Agriculture, and afterwards attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa. There she met and later married Clair J. Galloway in 1950.

They had one child, Joseph, born in 1957. They celebrated 58 years of marriage before Clair passed away in 2008, and had resided in the Beaverdale area of Des Moines since 1958.

Esther maintained the home while Clair was a partner in the international CPA firm Ernst & Young. Joseph, also a CPA, practices law in Des Moines, and is President of the Des Moines Park and Recreation Board. Joseph's son Carson is an Eagle Scout, college student, is employed by Ace Hardware and serves in the Iowa Air National Guard.

Esther was a member of Questers and the Friends of Des Moines Parks, and participated with Clair in Masonic activities. She was particularly interested in Early American history, and enjoyed several trips to Europe. Her cats and her German Shepard Mamie held a special place in her heart. Recently she received a Pioneer Certificate from the Iowa Genealogical Society for her ancestors having settled in Iowa in 1851.

Earlier this month she made a significant contribution to the Friends of Des Moines Parks for additional exercise equipment at the new adult playground at Franklin Field, which had been started by the Friends with the help of a donation from Joseph and Amy.

Esther was preceded in death by her husband and parents, sister Pearl Morrison Chandler, and brothers Raymond and Robert. She is survived by son Joseph (Amy) Galloway and grandson Carson Galloway, all of Des Moines; Amy's mother Marge Ashcraft of Manilla Manor & Peterson, Iowa; nieces including Melanie (Bart) Jackson of Vancouver, B.C.; cousins including Lorraine (Roland) Schelker of Tama, Iowa, Lucille (Jerry) Barnett of West Des Moines, Dennis Freland and Lowell (Jackie) Crouse, all of Maxwell, Iowa, and Frank (Pam) Winston of Belleville, Illinois.

Esther made her connection with Frank and Pam Winston for the first time in the last year of her life, through Joseph's genealogical research. Her father and Frank Winston's great-grandfather were half-brothers. Amazingly, Frank had a collection of photographs from his ancestors which included several unlabeled pictures that turned out to be Esther's father. This is noteworthy since Esther had no pictures of him due to the childhood house fire and Joseph had never seen a picture of his grandfather. From her childhood memories, Esther also helped identify a number of unknown relatives born during the Civil War era in other old photographs in Frank's collection. She was the last surviving person having this particular knowledge.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7pm Friday, December 17, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel. A private graveside service will be held at the Eden Cemetery in Rhodes, Iowa. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Friends of Des Moines Parks.
