Obituary

Ethel Irene Lovik Holcomb, 88, was born to Henry Alford Lovik and Anne Mayme Winterton Lovik at Forest City, Iowa on August 19, 1923. She passed away March 16, 2012 from complications of pneumonia.

Ethel was the oldest of six children and was raised in Howard and Floyd Counties in north central Iowa. She spent her childhood helping on her parent's farm. During World War II she met her husband, Donald Cooper Holcomb, and they were married in the Twin Cities in Minnesota. They moved back to northern Iowa where they farmed and owned an auto repair shop. Later they moved to Hawarden, Iowa and then to the Des Moines area. Together they raised five children.

Ethel was president of the Norwoodville Elementary School PTA and had worked at Frankles Department Store and the Boy Scouts of America Office in Des Moines. She loved being involved in scouting activities. She also loved going to garage sales, reading western novels, flower gardening and fishing and camping with her family. In her later years, Ethel liked to sings songs, play bingo and tell stories of the experiences of herself and her family on the farm.

Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Donald and her brothers, Clem Lovik and Howard Lovik. She is survived by her five children, Dennis (Suellen) Holcomb, Sharon Holcomb Middleton, Ron Holcomb, Cindy (Edward) Holcomb Moreno and Crystal (Woody) Holcomb Woodard. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Leann (Mike) Middleton Moskowitz, Michelle (Beau) Middleton Webb, Diana Holcomb, Jennifer Holcomb, Stephanie (Scott) Woodard Smith, Ross (Serena) Holcomb, Sally Woodard (Matt Polito), Alex Moreno; and her three great-granddaughters, Madison Webb, Olivia Webb and Angela Holcomb. In addition, she is survived by her sister, Dorothy Lovik Harris, her brothers, Harley Lovik and Wayne (Virginia) Lovik as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews and two aunts.

Visitation begins at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, and the family will be present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 22, at the Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell, Iowa. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Des Moines.
