Obituary

Ettabelle Rosenbaum, 82, died Friday, May 8, 2009 at the Bright Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Sunday, May 10, 2009 at Tifereth Israel Synagogue. Burial will follow at Jewish Glendale cemetery.

Ettabelle was born and raised in Des Moines. After working in Omaha and Chicago, she met and married Simon Rosenbaum and moved to his hometown of Colfax, Iowa. She adapted to small town life and happily raised her two children.

When her beloved Simon passed away in 1976, she had to start a new life. She worked as a professional portrait artist for several years, then took a "temporary" position at International Travel Associates. This started her long career as one of the best known travel agents in the city, ending in her retirement at age 82. She traveled the world, and as a result she could recount her experiences and colorful stories to clients and fellow agents. In a letter marking Ettabelle's 30 year anniversary with ITA in 2008, CEO Steve Chapman told her that "some of the most influential people in our community would not be comfortable if you were not there to guide them with their travel plans" and called her a "role model."

However, Ettabelle did not forget her commitment to her family, friends and community. She was a devoted grandmother to her five grandchildren and developed a close relationship with each of them. She also had a very devoted group of friends, and she was an active volunteer, including many years as a docent at the Des Moines Art Center. Ettabelle's warmth, intelligence, candor, artistic flair and sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her daughter Elaine (Lon) Moffitt of Altoona; her son Marty (Tema) Rosenbaum of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren: Mike (Kelly) Moffitt, Matt (Abby) Moffitt, Gail Rosenbaum, Steven Rosenbaum and Emily Rosenbaum; great grandson, Isaac Moffitt; brothers: Stanley Miller and Gene Miller. Ettabelle was preceded in death by her husband, Simon Rosenbaum and her brother, Arnold Miller.

Memorial contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood, Susan G. Koman Foundation or the charity of the donor's choice.

Dunn's Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
