Eugene "Nellie" L. Nelson, 72, died Sunday, July 17, 2005 at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines due to heart failure. Cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery, north of Madrid.

Gene was born to Ralph and Margaret Nelson on November 20, 1932 in Boone County Hospital, Boone, Iowa. He graduated from Madrid High School in 1951 and served in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1956. While serving in the Navy, Gene met Marian A. Truman and later they were married in Jacksonville, Florida on June 26, 1954. In 1956, Gene and Marian moved to Gene's hometown of Madrid, Iowa, where they made their home. He was employed with Barton Solvents in Des Moines, for 30 years, where he was known as "Nellie", until his retirement in 1987. In 1993, Gene and Marian sold their home in Madrid and became full-time RVer's, traveling all over the United States. He was member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Madrid, a long-time member of the VFW, the American Legion, AMVETS, and the Forty and Eight and Good Sam Camping Club.

He is survived by his wife, Marian; his brother, Howard Ronald "Shorty" Nelson of Arizona; his three daughters, Rene Swain of Prole, Iowa, Tracy Brunner of Madrid, & Peggy Winters of Wichita, KS; eight grandchildren, Sarah, Andrea & Kayla Steinkamp, Alexander & Gabrielle Brunner, and Zackary, Jacob & Mariah Winters. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, in 1998.

A memorial gathering will be held after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20 at Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home in Madrid, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
