Evelyn J. Gallagher passed away October 12, 2010 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines. A celebration of her life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 26th at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.

Evelyn was born October 26, 1914 to C.J. and Sally Zirbel in Montezuma, Iowa. She graduated from Montezuma High School and Drake University. After teaching at Maxwell, Iowa for two years she married Rolland Gallagher and returned to Drake as secretary to the dean of the College of Fine Arts. She was employed until WWII when she became an Army Hostess and was stationed at Camp Dodge and later at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri. Upon the return of her husband, Rollie, who served in the Air Force in India during WWII, she again worked at Drake in the office of the president.

Evelyn was a long time homemaker and enjoyed assisting in the office of Rosalie Gallagher, Interior Designer.

Evelyn was a long time volunteer at the Franklin Avenue Library and in 1996 received the Governor's Volunteer Award from Governor Branstad for her work with IRIS.

Evelyn served a term as president of the Des Moines Civic Music Association, was a board member of the Des Moines Symphony, and an over fifty year member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she had served as an elder. She was a member of Mu Phi Epsilon, Fortnightly Musical Club and PEO, Chapter HY.

Survivors include her daughter, Melinda (John) Neumann of Des Moines; son, Timothy (Van) Gallagher of Littleton , Colorado; grandsons, Andrew and Scott Neumann of Des Moines; and granddaughter, Kim Gallagher of Chicago.
