Evelyn Sowell, 89, passed from this life on Sunday, December 18, 2005 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines from cancer. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21 at Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church in Des Moines of which she was a member. Burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines.

Evelyn was born on April 9, 1916 to Frank and Nellie Woolworth Montgomery in Sioux City. She was a graduate of the University of South Dakota earning a bachelors degree. She was formerly employed with the Sioux City Journal, prior to her marriage. On May 8, 1943, Evelyn married Melvin L. Sowell in Sioux City, where they made their home before moving to Minneapolis, and then later to Des Moines in 1961.

Evelyn was a member of the Za-Ga-Zig Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and over a 70-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women, Delta Delta Delta Sorority and the Iowa Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary. Evelyn enjoyed traveling and serving as a volunteer for several organizations, including an elementary school and Hospice of Central Iowa helping with mailings. She also served as a Girl Scout Leader, receiving a ten year recognition pin. She touched many people and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by one daughter, Patti C. Sheppeard of Erda, UT; three nieces and six great-nephews. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Melvin "Mel" Sowell in 1993; a sister; and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20, at Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines. In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorials be made to either, Douglas Avenue Presbyterian Church, Kavanagh House on 56th Street, or the Shrine Hospital for Crippled Children.
