Evelyn V. Gates, 91, died Saturday, February 5 of heart failure at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m., Thursday at First Christian Church. Burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery.

Evelyn was born on a farm near Logan, Iowa. She attended rural school until she was through the eighth grade. She graduated with a Normal Training Certificate from the Woodbine High School and taught for a few years in rural schools near Woodbine. Then she went to Cedar Falls to get her degree in Elementary Education. This was followed by teaching school in Rippey and Jefferson. Following her life-time desire to become a worker in a church, she came to Des Moines and attended the Drake Bible College where she got her BA in Christian Education.

After graduating she began working at University Christian Church as Minister of Education for children and youth. During this time she was ordained into the ministry of the Disciples of Christ (Christian Church). Evelyn married Lowell Gates on January 12, 1947. He gave her special support in all the church activities she was involved in.

After 18 years at University Church, Evelyn went to work at the Christian Church in Ames and then the West Des Moines Christian Church. She then accepted a position with the YWCA in Des Moines. Evelyn was a staff person for the Religious Emphasis Committee and was the coordinator and guide of many tours. Retiring after 10 years, she and Lowell continued conducting tours with an office from their home.

Evelyn was a member of First Christian Church, Acanthus Eastern Star and Des Moines Women's Club.

Survivors include a sister, Lola and her husband, Wesley Moore of Marion formerly of Shelby, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Helen Leonard of Logan, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell; seven brothers and one sister.

Evelyn's family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Dunn's Funeral Home. Memorial Contributions are being directed to First Christian Church.
