Dean was a cold war veteran of the United States Air Force serving in communications and intelligence for 4 years. Their union was blessed with four children, Debra McNamara (James), Teresa Reierson (Greg), Stephen, and Michael (Angela).

After separating from the USAF and moving to Indianapolis Dean used his training to become an Air Traffic Controller. Dean and Barb moved to Des Moines Iowa in 1959 where they lived for 10 years. Dean continued his Air Traffic control career in Vegas and St. Louis. In 1972 Dean retired from his job with the government and moved back to Des Moines where he attended Drake University eventually graduating summa cum laude receiving a Masters plus 30 hours in education. Dean used his education degree to teach and work with students and parents at Edmonds Academy, Granger, and King Perkins elementary schools. In 1989 Dean left the field of education and became a Home Inspector and real estate Restorer and Developer. In 1997 Dean and Barb tried snow skiing and enjoyed skiing in Colorado every year with their children and grandchildren. They loved to travel visiting Alaska, Europe, Russia, Italy, Panama, Hawaii and the Philippines. Dean also enjoyed hunting with family and playing cards with the children, grandchildren and the "old retiree men's group."

He enjoyed the wildlife that came to his yard and the saying was, "If it moved grandpa fed it!."
In addition to being a loving husband and father, he was a much loved grandfather to Nicole, Amy, Megan, Amanda, Kory, Foster, Michael, Andrea, Philip, Kelly and David, and great-grandfather to Maddie Grace, Kendell, Kate, and Leah.
