Obituary

Faye Odell Brown, 101, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2007 at Wesley Acres, where she resided. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 19 at Park Avenue Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Masonic Cemetery.

Faye was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa on January 22, 1906 to James and Emma (Tipling) Odell. She lived most of her life in Des Moines, where she graduated from East High School and attended business school. She married Rene A. Brown on April 8, 1928; they were two months short of celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary when Rene passed away in February 1978. Faye and Rene lived their entire married lives in the same home in the Oak Park area on 11th Street. Faye continued to make her home there until the fall of 2005. Faye worked for John Deere Des Moines Works and retired in 1966 to care for her mother whose health was failing. Faye and Rene enjoyed traveling; one of their highlights was being selected to be a dancing couple on the Lawrence Welk Show. They enjoyed several winters in Mesa, Arizona, where they stayed at the Centebar Motel and Apartments and developed many special friendships. For many years after Rene passed away, Faye continued to spend the winter in Mesa with her good friend Iva Kirk.

Faye was an active member of Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, where she served as the church organist for over 50 years. Her church was very important to her and she always tried to help with its variety of activities. She was a 50 year plus member of the Auburn (now North Gate) Eastern Star, and a member of the Madrigal Music Club, Calvin Auxiliary and volunteered with the Methodist Hospital Guild. Over the years she enjoyed participating in the activities of her clubs and loved entertaining in her home. She also enjoyed making clothes for many dolls, which were donated for fund-raisers.

Faye was preceded in death by her husband, Rene; her parents, James (1935) and Emma (1969); and her brother Dale Odell (1929). She is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m., Friday at Iles Funeral Homes - Dunn's Chapel. Memorials may be made to Park Avenue Presbyterian Church or Calvin Community Auxiliary.
