Florence Green Hoffmann died peacefully on Saturday morning, December 13, 2014 at Wesley Acres in Des Moines. A private family burial will take place immediately at Glendale Cemetery, with a memorial service to be held in 2015 (on a date to be determined) at Dunn's Chapel in Des Moines.
Florence was born December 22, 1918 to Edward J. and Mabel (Falk) Green on a farm in Page County, Iowa. After attending a one-room school through 8th grade, she graduated from Red Oak High School as valedictorian in 1935, having won several statewide academic competitions sponsored by the University of Iowa. Florence was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Iowa, earning a B.A. in History in 1939. In 1940, she married William C. Hoffmann, Jr., a Des Moines attorney. Following World War II, Florence was active in political affairs until accepting the position of Coordinator of Public Affairs Programming for the Department of Adult Education in the Des Moines Public Schools in 1960. In 1967, she returned to college to renew her teaching certification, and earned a Masters of Science in Teaching, with an emphasis on gifted and talented education, from Drake University. After teaching at several elementary schools in Des Moines, Florence was named supervisor of the gifted and talented program for the Des Moines school district, a position she held until retiring in 1984. Florence made the most of her retirement, visiting all seven continents and over 80 countries, while relishing time spent at summer homes near Allenspark, Colorado and Spirit Lake, Iowa. She was a member of PEO Chapter JK, Pi Beta Phi sorority, Book Club, American Home Club and St. John's Lutheran Church.
Florence was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 50 years, W.C. (Bill) Hoffmann, Jr., and her sister, Maxine Douglass. She is survived by her son Richard (Linda) Hoffmann of West Des Moines, her granddaughter Courtney Hoffmann of Washington, D.C., her grandson Andy Hoffmann (currently working in Mongolia), one niece, five nephews, and many cousins and valued friends.
The family extends its thanks to Florence's caregivers at Iowa Methodist Medical Center and the skilled nursing facility at Wesley Acres (including hospice care) for their support and assistance through Florence's final illness. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, the Iowa Chapter of the Audubon Society, World Wildlife Fund or the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation.
