Freda Zwank Vande Berg passed away October 21, 2013 at Taylor House Hospice. Freda was born January 23, 1922, near Pella, Iowa, in an area known as Sandridge. In 1940, she married her best friend and the love of her life, Jerry Vande Berg, and they began their life adventure; first living in Pella, then Des Moines, Waterloo, and Cedar Falls; returning to Des Moines in 1963.

A dedicated, energetic, generous and faithful woman, Freda was known to say, "My passion in life is my family and my volunteer work." Her life and work certainly demonstrated that. A busy mother of three, she was active in her churches in many capacities, including singing in choirs for over fifty years. Having joined Westminster Presbyterian Church in Des Moines in 1964, she was ordained as an elder in 1975 and was instrumental in developing the first Westminster House in 1981.

She was employed in the occupational therapy department of the psychiatric unit of Broadlawns Medical Center, where she also volunteered. She was a board member of the Y Teens and of Self Help, and volunteered in many programs at Polk County Mental Health and Reach for Recovery. In 1968, she travelled to India to volunteer at the Francis Newton Hospital in Ferozepur.

Freda was an enthusiastic world traveler and avid reader. She enjoyed arts & crafts projects, her bridge club of many years, and friends and neighbors, but above all she most cherished her faith and family. She and Jerry had celebrated 72 years of married bliss in September, 2012; Jerry passed away on March 6, 2013.

Freda is survived by sons Alan VandeBerg of Urbandale, Jim (Lin) VandeBerg of Runnells, daughter Pam (Bruce) Chester of Clovis, CA, and ten grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Friday, November 8 at 11:00 am at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison, Des Moines. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial contributions may be directed to Westminster. Online condolences may be shared at
