Obituary

G. Dwight Hunter, 93, of Des Moines, IA passed away Friday, July 30, 2010. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am, Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at Westover Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Masonic Cemetery.

He was born April 24, 1917 in Iowa City, IA, the son of George and Minnie Hunter. On February 24, 1941 he married the late Alice Gonder Hunter.

Dwight retired as Chief Test Engineer at John Deere Des Moines Works, where he was employed for 31 years. Prior to, he served in the US Army in the Pacific Theater WWII, and was discharged as Lieutenant Colonel. He was highly decorated, honored with the Bronze Star with one cluster, the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. He served as commander of his infantry battalion in the Philippines. Following the end of the war he was sent to Korea as a military governor.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Dwyta and John Schroeder of Honolulu, HI; granddaughters: Julie (Andrew) Parsons of Seattle, WA and Kelly (Wayne) Creasey of Spokane, WA; three great grandchildren: Joshua, Nathan and Lillian Creasey. Dwight was preceded in death by his wife Alice Gonder Hunter and son, Dr. Randy Hunter.

The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 pm, Monday, August 2, 2010 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa-Kavanagh House.
