Genevieve "Genny" Valentine, 81, of Pleasant Hill died, close to her family, on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at her home in Pleasant Hill. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, January 3, 2011 at St. Mark Episcopal Church of which she was a member. Burial will be at the Altoona Cemetery.

Genny was born on March 16, 1929 in Castle Hayne, NC to Joseph and Eva (Gregory) Register and grew up a proud southern girl. During World War II she met Ray Valentine, a handsome Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune , NC, and they were married on January 26, 1946. They moved to Ray's home state of Iowa following the war and resided in Iowa Falls. They came to Pleasant Hill in 1964.

Genny enjoyed embroidery and canning. She has a great gardening ability and grew a beautiful yard full of flowers. She was an excellent cook known for her southern fried chicken, ham balls and World Famous Aunt Genny's Bread and Butter pickles. She had a very caring and generous spirit which led her to always think of the needs and comfort of her family and friends before her own.

Genny is survived by her two sons, Melvin (Linda) Valentine of Waterloo and Robert (Lou Ann) Valentine of Pelion, SC; daughter, Susan (Richard) Churchill of Charlotte, NC; nine grandchildren, Wendy Valentine, Kristie Cantu, Lance Valentine, Joe Churchill, Amy Porter, Melinda Valentine Davis, Ryan Valentine, Michael Churchill and Amanda Valentine; 15 great grandchildren with two more expected; brother, Joseph I. (Sandra) Register of Valdosta, GA; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Ray; parents; four brothers, Oscar, Doris, James and Bill; and five sisters, Edna Farr, Ethel Register, Mary Register, Virginia Enfirm and Barbara Pridgen.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, January 2 at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel where a prayer and memory service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mark Episcopal Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
