George F. Ludvik, 91, died Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at Scottish Rite Park.

Funeral services will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 3424 Forest Ave., Des Moines at 10:30a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2010. A private burial will be held at a later date.

George was born in Dearborn, Michigan, to Benjamin E. and Olga (Thai) Ludvik. He was raised there and while in high school earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.

He attended the University of Illinois where he earned a Masters degree in chemistry and a Doctorate in entomology. He worked for the Illinois Natural History Survey, the Tennessee Valley Authority, Monsanto Chemical Company, and Zoecon Corporation as a research and development scientist. He finished his career by working for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He developed seven patents for Insecticides, including the one for TEP, a major agricultural pesticide. George was a member of the American Registry of Professional Entomologists and the Entomological Society of America. He served In the U.S. Army Medical Corps on the European front during World War II, including the Battle of the Bulge.

George married Virginia E. Walsh of Albion, Illinois, on June 13, 1942. They lived in Alabama; St. Louis, Missouri; San Jose, California; and Washington, D.C., while he was working. When he retired, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona. They particularly loved to travel around the Southwest area of the country. They moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 2000.

George will be greatly missed by his wife of 68 years, their children; Nancy Taylor (Don), Judith Giannini and James Ludvik (Sunny), their six grandchildren, their seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church/Pastor's Fund or to Scottish Rite Park Good Brotherhood Fund.
